Changing the device location

ThingPark supports several modes to locate the device:

  • Manual: the device location (latitude and longitude) is manually set by the device manager.

  • Network Geolocation: the device location is derived by the network, using triangulation techniques. These techniques rely on measurements reported by each base station receiving the uplink packets of the device:

    • The fine timestamp, offering nanosecond-level accuracy, is mandatory for the Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) geolocation technique.
    • The Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) measured by the base station may be used to provide coarse estimation of the device location in absence of fine timestamps.

Network geolocation has special licensing terms, make sure your current license includes this feature before activating it.

    caution

To use network geolocation, the device must be covered by at least three base stations. If this is not the case, activating this feature is not recommended to avoid excessive draining of the device battery.

The LOCATION widget of the device's detailed page shows the current location of the device, either derived by the network or manually set by the device manager depending on the location mode in use.

note

When devices having an embedded GPS report their location in their uplink payloads, this reported location is visible in the decoded format of the payload, but it is currently not reflected in the LOCATION widget of the device's detailed dashboard.

Follow these steps to change the location mode of your device:

  1. Select the device you want to edit. You may search it by its name or DevEUI.

  2. In the LOCATION widget, click CHANGE LOCATION. The Mode field becomes editable now.

If you want to manually set the location, use one of the following options:

    • Either via the Search box on the top of the map: start typing to search,
    • or by directly placing the marker in the right location on the map,
    • or by setting the latitude and longitude in text input below the map. Use the compass button to switch between decimal and degree/minute/second formats.
  3. When you are done, click Save, otherwise click Cancel to undo the change.

    -> The location changes.

note

If the location using Google Maps does not display, it means that the Google Maps API key has not been installed on the platform. In this case, the location is displayed in text mode.
